Signed in pencil on the print, lower right. The view is of the Portals of the Past located in San Francisco�s Golden Gate Park, Originally part of a destroyed mansion on Nob Hill, the architectural detail was moved to the park after the 1906 earthquake. Leopold Hugo (1866-1933) was a master California pictorialist. After he established a studio in Santa Cruz in 1917, he became renowned for images such as this one of the eucalyptus and cypress trees on the Monterey coastline. This photograph has the feel of an etching or charcoal drawing, a visual style popular amongst Pictorialists. Keywords: architecture
