Description:
A complete set of 7 pieces-nearly mint condition-each piece individually marked "USONA", a curling dragon in the center and signed "Goodwin" in script underneath the dragon! This beautiful set, made in the late 1800's, came from East Liverpool, Ohio, a city proclaiming to be the pottery center of the world at that time. A riverboat captain bought this set for his wife, traveling the rivers in the state of Ohio,--bringing her a gift after being away from home for a period of time. She certainly no doubt loved this gift for it is one of a kind. The squat pitcher stands approximately 6 inches tall and measures 8.5 inches wide including the applied handle. Beautiful bunches of luscious Concord grapes are hand-painted on the front in colors of grape, muted purple and wine. The artist has blended the muted background to enhance the bunches of grapes in tones of lavender, dark greens and muted aqua. The artist has marked this "lemonade jug" on the bottom and that is what we wish to call it. All around the top rim of the jug is a gold-coin gilt and in perfect condition! The back side of the jug has one bunch of grapes with triple clusters. Six mugs complete this set (and we wish to call them a mug because they resemble a mug of today with a handle that has beading and muted shaded colors)The mugs have hand-painted bunches of Concord grapes and match the lemonade jug. They also have gold rims around the top. Size of the mug-4.25 inches tall x 4.5 inches wide including the handle. the mugs are delicately shaped with a slight flare and the inside is creamy white porcelain.
