One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that we will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** The Legend of the Hounds. By George Henry Boker. New York: William Edwin Rudge, 1929. #155 of 200 de luxe copies in which all of the illustrations are colored by hand and the frontispiece signed by the artist, Gordon Ross. 32p., brown cloth with gilt, Introduction by Owen Culbertson. A poem, written in 1867 and first published in 1869 with other works by the author but heirs of the subject of the poem destroyed all available copies thus making it a rare item. Mr. Fretwell's bp on front fixed endpaper. Condition VG+.
