Description: Here is one of the most fabulous – demanding your attention – books I have seen in a long time! The entire book is in French and the title page reads as follows: Moeurs, Usages et Costumes au Moyen Age et a L’Epoque de la Renaissance Par Paul Lacroix (Bibliophile Jacob) Conservateur de la bibliotheque Nationale de L’Arsenal Ouvrage Illustre de quinze planches chromolithographiques executes Par F. Kellerhoven et de quarte cent quarante gravures Troisieme Edition Pairs Libraire De Firmin Didot Freres, Files et Cle Imprimeurs de L’Institut, Rue Jacob, 56 1873. Translated into English it reads: Manners, Uses and Costumes at the Average Age and have the Time of the Rebirth By Paul Lacroix (Bibliophile Jacob) Preserving of the Nationale library of the Arsenal Works Famous of fifteen chromolithographic boards executes By F Kellerhoven and of quad a hundred and forty engravings Third Edition Pars Bookseller From Firmin Didot Freres, Files and Cle Imprimeurs of the Institute, Rue Jacob, 56 1873. This book is 4to in size (11 3/8”h). As I already mentioned the text is in French. It is beautifully bound in red leather with a highly ornate gold gilt pattern. The spine and both boards are highly decorative and detailed in luxurious gold gilt – with every inch covered. All edges of the leaves are gilt. The most breathtaking part of this masterpiece is the illustrations! It is illustrated throughout with 15 spectacular full-page chromolithographs trimmed in gold gilt, plus a staggering 440 in-text engravings. There is some slight shelf wear along with some slight cracks on the head and tail of spine along the joint. There is a previous owner’s book plate along with some hand written script on the interior ffep. The binding is tight and clean. This is an absolutely gorgeous account of life in the Middle Ages and Renaissance – it would make a spectacular gift not to mention the perfect addition to a fine collection/library. Striving For Excellence It isn’t brilliance or just getting the breaks, It is consistent attention to & honest respect for the Customer. Blue Dolphin Antiques
