Description: A touch of history ... Late Victorian early Art Nouveau toi et moi ring with rose cut diamond and pearl. In our everlasting quest to find fresh antique jewelry we stumbled upon a real treasure. A jeweler's stock that has been in the family vaults for over 80 years. It is not often that we find jewelry that has been "trapped" in a time capsule. All jewelry in this stock was brand new when it was stored decades ago and besides a little dusting off we didn't have to do anything to offer it in its original splendour. This is as close to "brand new antique jewelry" as it can get. Object group: rings Country of origin: Although it does not carry any legible control marks we believe it is of Belgian origin. Style: late-Victorian early Art Nouveau Style specifics: early Art Nouveau - The subject of this piece, although typical 19th Century, announces the coming of the Art Nouveau style. Period: ca. 1900 Source of inspiration: love Theme: Toi et Moi ring - The French call this shape of rings "Toi et Moi" which means "You and me". Material: 18K bi-color (yellow and white) gold , although most of this jewel is in yellow gold, the diamonds are set in white gold. This finds it origin in a much older period where it was common for diamonds to be set in silver. Extra information: engagement ring - An engagement ring is a finger ring of no generally accepted form that is given by a man to his fiancée as a token of marriage engagement, in the manner of the earlier betrothal ring, and indistinguishable in form or style. In recent years such rings have normally been set with a gemstone, usually a diamond (or any stone other than the ill-reputed opal), as a solitaire, of varying sizes, cuts, styles, and cost, but in the 19th century some were set with a pearl. In the same century the custom arose in England of separate engagement ring and wedding ring, and in very recent years such rings have sometimes been made en suite as a matching pair of similar style. Diamonds: One rose cut diamond. We do not have the weight of this diamond which is normal in our trade when it comes to rose cuts. Precious stones: One pearl Birthstones: Diamond is the birthstone (or month stone) for April and pearl for June. Hallmarks: No trace.
