Description:
Exceptional carved oak late Victorian hall clock (tallcase clock) in the style of Horner. Original signed Elliott type [Elite] three train movement striking the quarter hours and hours on nine tubes. Dial signed Bawo & Dotter, N.Y., Patentees & Makers. This clock case probably was made by Horner due to the exceptional carving of the North Winds head at the apex, lion's head, flower, leaf and foliate work, and devil's head in the base. This case is of bombe styling, therefore, the entire top and base carving is carved out of the block and not applied. The only applied pieces are some minor string molding in the waist section. The finish on this clock is a murky, dark finish original to the case that was done circa 1900 to make the clock look like a true Renaissance clock. This finish, satisfactory to most people, could be removed by any professional restorer. Clock is in fine working order, dial has some darkening spots in the silvering, otherwise in perfect condition. Dimensions: 8'6" in height.
