Description: Extremely fine and rare late eighteen century Baltimore mahogany tallcase clock in the Boston style. Boston styled clocks found their way to Baltimore in the 1780s. There are only a handful known of this distinctive styling. This clock is an exceptional example of Baltimore craftsmanship with its distinctive rosewood banding and crotched mahogany bookmarked veneers in the waist door. This feature was a known method used in cabinet construction in Baltimore. The secondary wood is yellow poplar which is a southern wood, therefore further evidence that this Boston styled case was definitely made in Baltimore. The mechanics and feet are completely original, unique type dial, signed W.M. Atkinson, Baltimore. William Atkinson is listed in the Baltimore City Directory as working 1787-1789. He then moved to Tennessee, therefore, this clock can be dated within those three years. The signature is in a fancy script and is original. There are a few minor touch ups to the dial but not to the signature. The weights are canisters filled with sand as in the Boston tradition of the Willards. This clock is considered a Southern clock and therefore, extremely rare and desirable. Dimensions: 96.5" in height.
