Description:
Large Japanese cloisonn koro with butterflies and gold dust design. The interior is mottled green enamel. The koro top features eleven petal openings and an amethyst knob or finial. The top has a gold dust design with green enamel ground, half chrysanthemums and flowers repeating pattern with blue and rust-red lozenges. The body of the koro is supported on three brass feet. It is decorated with red cloisonn circles and gold dust with green ground scroll pattern. The body has several bands: (1) black ground with circles; (2) rust-red ground with circles; (3) matching pattern of the top with alternating ground of blue and green, a pattern of half chrysanthemums and flowers with a banner of alternating blue and rust-brown lozenges with a white, blue and white flower and brown flower with white center; (4) large band of gold dust with dark green with 7 polychrome butterflies, scrolling leaves and vines with chrysanthemums interspersed; (5) brown between blue shield pattern followed by a rust-red circle band. The bottom is light brown ground with scroll pattern with white and blue flowers. Condition: Great looking, but has some loss of cloisonn on the upper area of the lid (below the openings) as well as missing some spots of green enamel on the inside of the lid. The body of the koro is in good condition with no dents or damage, but has a minor rough spot with slight pitting/loss of enamel. Marks: No signature. Date: Meiji period, late 1800's
