Description:
A large Japanese bronze mirror (kagame), late Edo to early Meiji Period, ca.1850-80. Diameter is 9.25" diameter. Before mirrored glass was widely available, highly polished metals, (in this case bronze), was used to create hand mirrors. Often the mirrors would be decorated with beautiful designs in raised relief. Mirrors were customarily given as wedding gifts. This is a very large and significant bronze mirror. The raised relief design depicts a scene of mature pine trees, bamboo and a solitare crane. All are auspicious symbols of longevity. The 2 large raised relief characters are "fortune" and "longevity". The entire mirror exhibits an age-worn warm patina. The condition consensus is very fine condition without any injury or repair.
