Description:
Rare laminated rosewood Rococo Victorian sofa in the "Bird"
pattern. This sofa features a fabulous open carved crest with two birds,
fruit and flowers. The entire back is also pierce carved. The frame has
eight layers of lamination including the carving (see photo). A nearly
identical sofa is in the Smithsonian Institution and is shown on page 119 of
American Furniture of the 19th Century 1840-1880 by Eileen and Richard
Dubrow. This pattern has been attributed to John Henry Belter but it was
more likely made by Alexander Roux. It has old and damaged upholstery and
the frame is in mostly "as found" condition. We could have it reupholstered
in your fabric for an additional cost. It is the best sofa we have ever
offered for sale!
