The Rolex Oyster Perpetual rotor self-winding wristwatch was first introduced in 1931. With a self-winding mechanism the watch became the benchmark for all subsequent automatic wristwatches. The Perpetual movement transforms each movement of the wrist to wind the watch, since then the rolex watches have been constantly evolving.
A rotor that sat on the movement swung in either direction, thereby winding the watch with even the slightest movement of the wrist. A mechanism was also introduced to ensure that over-winding became a thing of the past. The watch was even more accurate than a traditional watch.
The Perpetual movement transforms each movement of the wrist into a reserve of power which keeps the mainspring at optimum tension, thereby ensuring greater accuracy and reliability.
The modern rotor system was developed and patented by Rolex and introduced into the Oyster line as the Oyster Perpetual in 1931. Emile Borer (Aegler-Borer family), Rolex's technical chief at the time, is credited with inventing the modern rotor system.
