To many collectors the Jumeau doll represents the apex of the dollmaker's art. Margaret Whitton, associate curator, dolls, at the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum, has written after extensive research, this lavishly illustrated handbook, the first volume ever exclusively devoted to the Jumeau. Here is the fascinating history, verbal and pictorial, of this famous antique.

The Jumeau doll was manufactured in factories near Paris for a century after 1842. Up to the end of the nineteenth century it was an unsurpassed model of luxury, grace, elegance, and mechanical invention. What's more, it wore the finest French fashion created by true fashion designers. Rare today, a Jumeau in good condition and in its original clothes commands several thousand dollars at auction.

Collectors will find this book a reliable, judicious guide to proper identification and dating of Jumeau dolls. The 60 black-and-white photographs and 32 pages of photographs in full color, all on coated stock, include many details with manufacturer's labels, initials, etc. and show dolls on display at the Strong Museum, in all their fantastic plumage. Talking dolls, mobile and fashion dolls, bebes and sophisticates, dolls of wood or ""composition,"" with human hair, porcelain heads and hands and glass eyes; doll images of famous figures; ""exotic"" dolls made for foreign markets-all display the rare, exquisite costumes created originally for them.

Doll collectors will discover no better authority on Jumeau than Margaret Whitton; anyone interested in the history of toys or who loves a fashion show in miniature, will delight in these pages.
