Description:
This attractively designed lithographic advertising trade card shows an image of Jumbo the elephant. Jumbo was the most heralded elephant of modern times. While in the London Zoo the elephant was ridden by thousands of school kids as well as Teddy Roosevelt & many other famous people of the time.
P. T. Barnum purchased the elephant from the London Zoo in 1882 for the then amazing sum of $10,000. Over 100,000 English school kids had written to Queen Victoria begging that the elephant be kept in England & objecting to the proposed sale which went thru anyway. Barnum spent an even more amazing $20,000 additional in transporting Jumbo to the U.S.
What many people saw as Barnum's total financial folly turned into a goldmine as Barnum took in over 1.5 million dollars in the first year from Jumbo's performances in the U. S. in Barnum's "Greatest Show On Earth" Circus. Jumbo died several years later while saving a baby elephant from a runaway train.
Additional extremely fascinating & in depth info may be found on Wikipedia & also a very interesting & informative site /magazine/spring2002/jumbo.html
