Artist initials printed within image lower left: "DR.". Late 19th - Early 20th Century. Dimensions: Paper: 10 1/4 x 7 3/4in. Weight: 2oz. (Box F) Condition: Darkening to paper throughout. A few minor areas of light staining scattered throughout. Minor creasing at all four corners. Light soiling to surface. Otherwise, very good condition overall. Artist's Biography: Jules Renard Draner (Belgian, 1833-1923). Illustrator and caricaturist, Draner was born Jules Renard in Liège as the son of a printer. He found employment with the Société des Zincs de la Vieille-Montagne, while he also produced cartoons for local magazines like Uylenspiegel. In 1861, he settled in Paris, where he began collaborations with magazines like Le Charivari, L'Éclipse, Paris-Comique, L'Illustration, Le Monde Illustré and Le Journal Pour Rire. In 1879 he succeeded Cham as the author of the topical cartoon about Paris in Le Charivari. He was later succeeded by Henriot. Draner additionally designed theatre costumes, among others for the plays of Jacques Offenbach. He specialized in military caricatures. He used the name Draner, a pseudonym (Renard in reverse spelling) he used all his life for all his graphic work. [Source: ]
