Description:
Extremely well written New England spiritual journal, 9 ¼” x 5 ¾”, 175 pages, beginning March 13, 1948, and extending through July 7, 1949, largely in the Christian Science tradition. This was likely used by the writer for self study. Each page is filled with suggestions on how to heal many human problems – conflicts with others, housing problems, illnesses -- by applying the writer’s personal inspirations and interpretations of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. The writer also quotes poets and writers throughout.
In small part, “Our habitual attitude of thought is of the greatest importance. When through learning to love and obey God, we exchange materiality for spirituality, and allow self-interest and self-righteousness to be replaced by unselfed love, then are we obeying the spiritual law of loving our neighbor – seeing man perfect as God knows him. 1Peter 3:8, 9
Christian Science teaches “…That the real man, the image and likeness of God, is sustained in perfect harmony by his all-loving Father-Mother God. When through Christian Science the law of God is intelligently applied to problems of human discord, error is effaced and harmony becomes apparent. No situation can arise in human experience which cannot be harmoniously resolved through action, spiritual perception that in God, man lives and moves and has being…Every idea of God is forever at one with him.”
“The utilization of spiritual ideas or intuitions which come from God always results in the betterment of human conditions, thus proving God’s unfailing goodness and love.”
Regarding home: “As we gain a better understanding of God and man as His reflection, as we radiate and express such qualities of home as service, order, tolerance, hospitality and unselfed love and, as we are grateful for our present dwelling, however humble it may be, our human sense of home improves. Home in any language means a place of refuge and security and protections are offered. No more permanency assured than in the Father’s house of many mansions spoken of by Jesus…Home is the consciousness of love. It’s where God is, where God is expressed.”
Regarding human relations: “Story of Jacob and Esau shows us how the true concept of God and man destroys hate and brings about harmonious relations between human beings. Gen. 33:10 When we can see our fellow man as though we had seen the face of God, in other words, as God’s reflection, he will be pleased with us and we with him. God, love, is the only governor of the universe and we are in reality His children. Coloss. 3: 10, 11.”
Regarding illness: “People often fall ill from their inner worries, resentments and despairs. The chronic victim of pain and aches may be suffering from nursing a smoldering grudge against someone close to him, and is usually unaware that he bears a chronic resentment. Science and Health clearly points out the mental nature of disease and shows how it is healed by spiritual means alone as illustrated in the teaching and healing works of Jesus.”
Regarding fear: “One immediately experiences a lessening of fear as thought opens to the expectancy of good. He who has an absolute faith in the allness of God, has built his house on the rock of spiritual understanding. He faces the future fearlessly…The more real God becomes to one, the greater his expectancy of good…”
“What is needed is a new concept of man – new, yet as old as the first chapter of Genesis, which tells us that God made man and made him good – the concept which Christian Science has brought again to the consciousness of mankind…The only way to achieve the full realization of perfect man is to start with the correct premise—man’s true identity as the image and likeness of God.”
Much, much more to this lengthy journal, which is in excellent condition. A great find and a wonderful addition to any collection of spiritual memorabilia.
