Description: A 19th century hand-coloured engraving by John Leech entitled “ The Two Strings”. It depicts a young woman entertaining two young men, the “two strings” to her bow in the marriage stakes . Neither are at all perfect - one is very plump and the other is saturnine with long side whiskers- but she wears an expression of smugness. She knows that she will get a proposal out of at least one of them, and thus be that most economically necessary and respectable of things in the Victorian era - a married woman. In very good condition, with a few spots of foxing in the top centre of the picture. Modern frame and mount: frame is gilded and has figured wood effect band. Mount is pale pink with two rows of gold coloured bands. Measurements: 15 inches (38cm) wide and 12.1/4 inches high (31cm)
