Description:
JOE DESCOMPS (French, 1872-1948) was born in Clermont-Ferrand and studied under H. Hiolin. He exhibited often at The Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais and was elected a member in 1893. He designed a huge range of sculptures in the Art Nouveau style (circa 1880 to 1910). Art Nouveau could be said to be the first 20th-century modern style because it was the first style to stop looking backwards in history for ideas, taking inspiration instead from what it saw around it, in particular the natural world. Descomps concentrated in bronze and ivory figures. This graceful bronze nude atop a marble base is a good example of his work. Dimensions: 8-3/4 inches including 3-1/4-inch square base; bronze portion measures 7-3/4 inches. This is your opportunity to to acquire a beautiful Art Nouveau work of art by one of best proponents of the style, who flourished in the country where the style originated.
