Signed in ink lower right corner: "Jansem". Dimensions: Image: 26 x 18in. Mat: 32 3/4 x 24 3/4in. Weight: 1lb. Condition: Attached to mat with adhesive along all four edges recto. Slight darkening to paper throughout. A few small areas of light brown staining/soiling to paper throughout. It appears that the drawing has had some conservation work. There is what appears to be an 8 1/2in. long tear extending down from the upper edge through the left side of the figure's face, 7 1/2in. from the left side. The tear is only visible on the front side of the paper and cannot be seen verso; the original paper may be laid down to a newer backing paper. Otherwise, good condition overall. Artist's Biography: Jean Jansem [Armenian-born French Painter, born in 1920]. Jean Jansen was a figure, landscape, marine and genre painter of European subjects: fishermen and children of Greece, bullfighting in Spain, Italian landscapes and markets, scenes of Venice and French France village marketplaces and landscapes. He was born in 1920 in Seuleuze, Asia Minor (Armenia) and spent his childhood in Salonika, Greece. He arrived in France at the age of 11 where he started painting.He took evening courses in the Montparnasse Quarter in Paris, and graduated from the School of Arts Dératifs in 1938. He often visited the atelier of "La Grande Chaumière", and exhibited his first oil painting at the "Salon des Indépendants" in 1939. Since 1951, Jansem has held exhibitions of his work in France (Paris, Amiens, Nantes, Avignon, Marseille, Nancy, Toulouse, Cannes, Mulhouse, Bayonville, Clermont-Ferrand...) and in other countries (Rome, Palermo, Lausanne, New-York, Chicago, Palm-Beach, London, Brussels, Montréal, Tokyo, Osaka, Beirut, Sao Paolo, Johannesburg, Germany, Art Expo New York and Los Angeles.
