Description: Jared Sparks, 1789-1866. American historian, owner and editor of the "North American Review," author of "The Writings of George Washington" and "The Works of Benjamin Franklin," among others. He also served as president of Harvard University from 1849-53. Offered here: ALS, Cambridge, Octobr 9, 1854, 1p, 4to, to Mr. Charles Z. Dana (1819-97), who was at the time managing editor of the New York Tribune. Dana later served as the editor of the New York Sun and as Assistant Secretary of War during the Civil War (1863-65). Very boldly written. Folds, some minor spotting and minor wear to edges, otherwise in very good condition. A significant letter from one influential literary celebrity to another. $175.
