Description:
This incredible sideboard or server is truly a piece de resistance. Everywhere you look are detailed carvings delicately highlighted with gilding. Check out the top side panels and base side panels with finely hand painted sprigs of flowers, birds, butterflies and branches. The cabinet top, drawers and door fronts have hand painted scenes of children floating in a tub picking lotus flowers, Asian women dressed in kimonos, pagodas, child carrying a lantern and other scenes. The 2 drawers have rounded fronts. The campaign style hardware is solid cast brass and is designed to recess into the drawer and be unobtrusive. Notice the original fancy brass hardware on the door fronts. There was most likely a small rod that locked the doors by sliding it between the door pulls, which is missing. Inside is a single shelf. The server's most prominent feature is the beautifully rendered reversed painting on glass in the center top panel. The hand painted scene is of children fishing and an elderly man crossing a bridge over a stream. The quality and simplistic design reflects great skill. Under the top crest a previous owner installed a light to project down on the painting. It was professionally installed and can be easily removed but it does add a wonderful affect when turned on. The fixture is only visible upon very close inspection and looking up. The finish and paint is original and in excellent condition. A statement in any room or home!
