Description:
JAPANESE YEN, MEIJI YR.19 (1886), ALMOST UNCIRCULATED CONDITION.Composition: Silver .900 fine Weight: 26.9 grams Dimensions: 38.6 mm A fine Mid-Meiji Japanese Yen with full mint-luster, lightly frosted devices and proof-like surfaces. Proof-like surfaces ares the mirror-like finishes that appear on both sides of this coin. Along with the frosted devices, a nice contrast is created between the devices and fields of the coin. Proof-like surfaces and frosted devices are the result of and an indication of an earlier coin-striking relatively to a pair of mint dies. This occurrence usually diminishes after the first couple of hundred or so coins are struck on a pair of dies. Finding both sides with these properties is relatively scarce. This is due to front and back dies wearing out and having to be replaced at different time. The coin has light rubbing on both surfaces of the coin.
