Description: This exceptional lacquered and inlaid rosewood cabinet comes from the Kyoto region of Japan and dates from circa 1875. It is a truly exceptional example of Meiji period craftsmanship, with museum-quality inlaid brass, ivory and mother-of-pearl in the Shibayama manner, depicting figural and bird scenes on a gold lacquered ground. It measures 84" (7 feet) tall and 60" (5 feet) wide and 18" deep. It features nine sliding doors over three short drawers and an open shelf section. Condition is excellent. There are only a handful of losses to the inlaid decoration, and no major repairs or restorations. This cabinet was purchased at auction in New York at Phillips on November 8, 1981, in lot 282. This cabinet resides in our client's gallery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City and may be seen by appointment.
