Description: This is a rare pair of French Old Paris porcelain Victorian figures circa 1840-1850 by one of Frances top 19th century porcelain makers Jacob Petit coping 18th century Rococo Meissen porcelain figures by Johann Joachim Kändler. He was the most important modelleur of the Meissen porcelain manufacture of the 18th century. The beautiful figure are dressed in 18th century costume. The Male is siting in a Rococo chair sideways with his legs crossed reading a book. He has a powdered wig on tied in the back with a black bow. Under his chair are nicely molded Meissen flowers . The female has a sewing bobbin in one hand nice detailed cloths and jewelry. They are both on Rococo Revival gold gilt pierced bases. Each are singed on the bottom with the under glaze Jacob Petit J.P. in dark blue. They belong to the neo-Rococo period of the mid 19th century when earlier artistic styles were reinterpreted throughout Europe. Height 6". Very good condition. Jacob Petit (1796-1868) was the greatest porcelain maker of mid 19th century France . A self-taught painter, he launched a modest porcelain manufacturing business in 1830. By 1839 Petit employed about 200 craftsmen and enjoyed great success. His production wares which can include vases, urns, clocks, figures, inkwells and perfume bottles. Of particular interest are the figural veilleuses, or bedside tea warmers, known as personnages. These brightly painted beauties can be found in the form of exotic characters like Chinese noblemen, sultans and sultanas, and fortune tellers, or more mundane subjects, such as nuns or street vendors. Each one is made in several parts, the top being the teapot and the bottom being hollow with an opening in the back to fit the tiny porcelain oil lamp.
