Description:
ULTRA RARE - EXTREMELY INTRICATE CANTON VASE with BUDDHA seated on a CLOUD THRONE, IMMORTALS, BATTLE SCENES, COURT SCENES and ANIMALS of the ZODIAC - ELEPHANT HEAD FEET - 20" - 8 POUNDS. This is without question one of the most intricately carved pieces we have ever had the privilege to own. The entire vase is replete with intricately carved figures that are shown to the deepest level of detail. This is a painted Chinese ivory vase and cover with figure of Buddha seated above Immortals on a cloud throne, the cylindrical body of the vase with loose ring mythical foo dog handles, carved beneath a Greek key fret band with continuous battle and court scenes, above a band of the twelve animals of the zodiac, the base with elephant head feet and four character seal script mark “Qianlong nan zhi” (made in the reign of the Emperor Qianlong (1736 – 1795)). BUDDHA - Buddha means the "Awakened One". He is someone who has awakened from the sleep of ignorance and sees things as they really are. Buddha is a person who is completely free from all faults and mental obstructions. There is nothing that Buddha does not know. He knows everything of the past, present, and future. Buddha also has great compassion that is completely impartial and embraces all living beings without exception by emanating various forms throughout the universe, and by bestowing his blessings on their minds. Through receiving Buddha’s blessings, all beings develop peaceful and virtuous states of mind. Through meeting an emanation of Buddha in the form of a Spiritual Guide, everyone will have the opportunity to enter the path to liberation and enlightenment. CLOUD THRONE - Buddha is seated on a "cloud throne" floating in the heavens. These celestial thrones are borne aloft by billowing cloud banks. 8 IMMORTALS - The tradition of depicting humans who have become immortals is an ancient practice in Chinese art. The Eight Immortals first appeared in the Jin dynasty. The Eight Immortals are considered to be signs of prosperity and longevity. They were frequent adornments on vases. The Eight Immortals are: 1) HAN HSIEN-KU - He was very poor but totally unconcerned. He performed wonderful feats and is able to foretell the future and often is depicted with a bouquet of flowers. He carries a flute and plays the Six Healing Sounds. 2) LAN TSAI-HO - He is an entertainer, street singer and beggar who gave his money to the poor. His symbol is a basket of flowers associated with longevity. 3) LU TUNG-PIN is the hero of marvelous wisdom. He carries a horse hair whisk symbolizing his ability to fly and walk on clouds. He is portrayed with a double-edged magic sword of supernatural powers given to him by a dragon. He would embarrass and punish the rich and powerful when he caught them oppressing the powerless and poor. 4) CHUNG-LI CHUAN - He is portrayed as bearded and thinly clad. His symbol is a fan which he uses to revive and reincarnate the souls of the departed. 5) TSAO KUO-CHIU gave away his wealth to the poor and went into the mountains to seek the Tao. His symbol is the castanets which he plays to facilitate meditation. He is said to be still living on earth. 6) HO HSIEN-KU became an immortal at age 14. She frequently flew to the mountains to meet other female immortals. Ho Hsien-Ku still appears to the virtuous, the innocent, and oppressed people in need of divine intervention. She holds a magic lotus blossom, the flower of open-heartiness and divine brilliance, which symbolizes her power and purity. 7) CHANG KUO-LAO was an old man and hermit who mastered the secrets of Immortality. His symbol is a tube containing wands with which he can foretell fortunes. He is known to help souls to reincarnate. 8) LI TIEH-KUAI or "Iron Crutch Li" was born in the 2nd Century, AD. He lived in the mountains for 40 years in meditation. He often forgot to eat or sleep. His symbols are the staff and gourd (a symbol of the universe). He is well known to the poor, sick and needy by his reputation for benevolence. FOO DOG - The Foo Dog is the symbol of good fortune, luck and wisdom.
