Description:
AUCTION ESTIMATE = $40,000 - 18th Century - ULTRA RARE FULLY CARVED TUSK of a HUNTING SCENE that is carved in deep relief. This carving is 100% genuine ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED in southern Germany by a gifted master craftsman in the 1700s. It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This carving is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible. The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed. The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA and can only be shipped to locations within the USA. Columbus (the experts in ivory carvings) provided an auction estimate of $ 40,000 in January of 2006. They also indicated that "pieces of this scale seldom come on the market". Auction estimates are typically very conservative and certainly well below retail values. This is a very rare carving of a European Hunting Scene tusk with one end carved with a hound's' (setter's) head. Fox hunting is an activity involving the tracking, chase, and sometimes killing of a fox, traditionally a red fox, by trained foxhounds or other scent hounds, and a group of followers led by a master of foxhounds, who follow the hounds on foot or on horseback. Fox hunting originated in the United Kingdom in the 16th century, but is practised all over the world. This tusk is fully carved all the way around the tusk with many different hunting type scenes. European ivory carvings are the rarest of all ivory carvings available and fully carved tusks are the most rare. The artist has done a wonderful job of capturing the mood of this piece. It is filled with action sequences that depict the times at which the piece was carved. This would make an incredible addition to your collection of fine European ivory art and could certainly serve as the centerpiece of your collection. It should only increase in value over time. This tusk measures an incredible 60" in length. Dimensions: 60.00" x 4.25" x 3.75" Weight: 20 Pounds
