Description:
AUCTION ESTIMATE = $3000 - WARRIOR EMPEROR on an ELABORATE THRONE in front of an ELABORATE PIERCED and FACETTED SCREEN - This is a beautiful work of art. This Warrior Emperor in Ming Dynasty style clothing has been hand carved from a solid piece of premium ivory. The deeply incised chain mail worn by this warrior emperor is very impressive. Please note the amount of detail evident in the chain mail alone. He holds a fully carved cup in his left hand and is resting his right hand on an extremely intricately carved sword he holds in front of him. The artist has provided a solid backdrop with dragons and lattice work. The dragon is the symbol of luck, wealth, good fortune and wisdom. The dragon represents male vigor and fertility and is also the imperial emblem of the Emperor. The dragon is the symbol of the emperor and ranks first amongst the 4 supernatural creatures. He has carved a Foo Dog into the headdress, three Foo Dogs into the chain mail armor (one on each shoulder and one on the breast plate) and three more Foo Dogs into the back of the throne on which the emperor is seated. The Foo Dog is the symbol of good fortune, luck and wisdom. Guardians such as these are placed at the entrance of a home, temple, palace or other building to guard the occupants from evil and harmful spirits. This carving has a lovely patina and is a very rare example of a seated warrior emperor. This carving has a smooth sheen finish and sits on a planked ivory base. This carving is 100% genuine ELEPHANT IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1900s. It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This carving is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible. The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed. The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA and can only be shipped to locations within the USA. In January of 2006 Columbus (the experts in Asian art) provided an auction estimate on this piece of $3,000. Auction estimates are conservative and typically well below appraised values. This amazing work of art is unique and could easily serve as a centerpiece for the finest collection of Asian art. It should only increase in value over time.
