The city of Faenza (from which the term faience derives it name) has been internationally famous for its ceramics since medieval times. It is a magnificent city imbued with a rich culture and a fascinating history. This volume is the first in a series dedicated to the regional ceramic centers of Italy.
Originally, the inaugural volume was intended to encompass the entire region of Emilia-Romagna but Faenza proved to be so rich in history and culture, and endowed with such an abundance of artistic genius (on a scale that is truly staggering) that we altered our course and devoted this book exclusively to the city. To do otherwise would have been an injustice to Faenza and a disservice to our readers.
Unlike our first book, Italian Pottery Marks from Cantagalli to Fornasetti, which spanned the entire Italian peninsula in 126 pages with more than 300 marks, Italian Pottery Marks - Faenza , the City of Ceramics, is a lavishly illustrated book with more than 200 pages and 125 pottery marks. This volume takes a less hurried, more leisurely stroll through the ancient streets of Faenza and introduces the reader to a group of men and women with intriguing stories to tell.
This book is not merely about the identification of pottery marks. It is the story of struggles, disappointments and triumphs. This is the story of a group of artisans attempting to earn a living in order to feed their families while being driven by an artistic soul to create lasting beauty at any personal cost to themselves.
When the reader has turned the last page and closed the book he, or she, might look upon their little Faentine cup, plate or pitcher and suddenly see in it a value well beyond any monetary cost. Hopefully the reader will discover within that piece of fired clay its hidden story, wonderful history and perhaps might even glimpse the soul of the artist who lovingly poured his skill, talent and love of art into its form, its glazes and its paints.
