Description: Edinburgh: John Grant, 1933-4., 1933. New edition edited by Frederick Webb Hodge. First edition thus. Three volumes. Volume I: Blue cloth, gold stamping on spine, pictorial embossment on front cover, lxii, 442pp., teg, frontis, introduction, illustrated with full-page plates in color, chiefly from the Indian Gallery, [formerly in the War Department at Washington], photogravure portraits, index; Volume II: Blue cloth, gold stamping on spine, pictorial embossment on front cover, viii, 458pp., teg, frontis, illustrated with full-page plates in color, photogravure portraits, index; Volume III: Blue cloth, gold stamping on spine, pictorial embossment on front cover, xvi, 355 [1]pp., teg, frontis, introduction by H. J. Braunholtz, two folding maps, illustrated with full-page plates in color, index. Throughout the three volumes are 123 full-page plates in color, photogravure portraits, and two maps in Volume III. Howe's M129 says. These are the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed. Originally issued in twenty parts [in nineteen]; but few sets were retained in that impracticable form. The original oil paintings of which the plates were copies were all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. Some light off-setting to the front and rear free endpapers of all three volumes, else fine, bright, tight copies. Mc Kenney's goal in commissioning the Indian Tribes of North America was both to educate the American public about these greatly exotic warriors & chiefs and to preserve them for prosperity a series of beautiful portraits the rest of the story is in the forward of these magnificent columns. I believe these books are a must have. Serious investment for anyone who has interest in Our Native Americans. These volumes are very rare. Striving For Excellence It isn't brilliance or just getting the breaks, It is consistent attention to and honest respect for the Customer.
