Description:
Extremely rare necklace of period Imperial Russian gold and silver miniature Easter eggs, two with enamel.Following the lead of the Tsars, who gave their wives and mothers the famed eggs created by Faberge, noble families gave one another smaller eggs of gold, silver, porcelain, hardstones or other materials. Some lucky women assembled a number of miniature eggs over the years and wore them during the Easter season from neck chains or bracelets.The eggs (from the left). 1. Gilt silver embossed with the letters "XB" for "Khristos Voskrese" ("Christ Is Risen"), hallmarked with the 84 standard and the Kokoshnik used in a regional city 1896-1907, 7/16" (all measurements exclude bales and jumprings). 2. Engine-turned silver with an applied shamrock of translucent green basse-taille enamel on one side, the back side with pale blue guilloche enamel, unmarked, 5/8" long. 3. Carved rock crystal (quartz) with a cap of 14K gold, the rock crystal with beautiful natural crazing, hallmarked for 56 zlotniks, maker's mark of "MB" (transliterated), and indistinct city mark for St. Petersburtg.
4. Gilt silver with cloissone enamel worked in three opaque shades and four rare translucent shades in a shamrock pattern (the four leaves of the shamrock could also represent the Easter cross), hallmarked for the 84 standard with the Moscow Kokoshnik used 1908-1917 and the maker’s mark "AN" (transliterated), 9/16" long. 5. 14K gold egg studded with a small collet-set natural pearl, hallmarked for 56 zlotniks and the city mark for St. Petersburg, 5/16" long. Origin: Russia, circa 1890-1917, all from the reigns of Alexander III and Nicholas II. The chain is of the period, but not Russian. Condition: #1, 3, 4 and 5 are in excellent condition. #2 has most of the pale blue enamel missing from the front side and a tiny bit of green enamel missing from the shamrock (the buyer could easily reverse the egg so the blue enameled side faces out). Size: chain, 20" long. Total Weight (eggs & chain): 18.0 grams.
