Description:
Origin: Saga Prefecture, Japan,Age/Period: ca.1850, Edo Period, Dimensions: (bowl) 4-1/16" diameter by 2-3/8" tall, (saucer) 3-5/8" diameter by 1-1/8" tall; A wonderful matching set of Ko-Imari Somesuke, (blue and white), porcelain ware consisting of matching bowl and sauce/side dish. We date both pieces to the early 19th century, but they could possibly date back to the late 18th century. These pieces are medium potted in fine porcelain with minor impurities. Both pieces are elegant and slightly out of round. This is consistent with earlier Imari Somesuke ware. The white glaze has a bluish tint to it. Both pieces have simple, yet powerful decorations. Each piece is decorated with 3 panels, each panel having 4 loosely painted Kanji characters, and all together forming a poem. Surrounding these panel are large exploding or flaming chrysanthemums. The kanji translates in English as follows: "Without direction, flowers blowing around, purple above, scarlet scattered, persimmon face, blowing eastward without reason." All decorations are painted in a deep cobalt-blue underglaze. This blue underglaze is uneven in color, ranging from a deep and rich cobalt blue to black with shiny black nuclei. This most likely occurred when the glaze was applied too thickly during the firing process. Again this is consistent with the attributed age and period of these pieces. The inside of each piece is decorated with cobalt-blue underglaze scroll-work, ring and center medallion with flora. The sauce/side dish has a cobalt-blue underglaze Arita symbol inside a single, blue ring that circumvents the inner foot rim. Condition Consensus: Excellent Condition (both pieces), museum quality, without any damage or repair.
