Table of Contents

Japanese Imari porcelain, with its vivid red, blue and gold palette, reached Europe in the late seventeenth century and created a sensation among collectors accustomed to the more austere palette of blue-and-white Chinese wares. Soon Imari chargers and full garnitures graced the palaces and great houses of Europe and formed significant portions of the massive collections of Asian porcelains formed by many kings and princes. When high prices and increased competition from China caused imports of Imari to slow. in the mid-eighteenth century, Imari continued to exert a strong influence on both the design and palette used to create porcelains at the newly established porcelain factories both in England and on the Continent.

Imari: Japanese Porcelains for European Palaces is the first exhibition in America to focus soley on Imari. Drawn from the extensive collection of Freda and Ralph Lupin, the exhibition features one hundred of the finest objects from their collection and spans the entire period of Imari production. The Lupins have been longtime and generous supporters of the New Orleans Museum of Art, with both Freda and Ralph serving as members of our Board of Trustees. Their mutual enthusiasm for Imari began over forty years ago, resulting in several hundred works which fill their historic French Quarter home in New Orleans. Their gracious willingness to share their collection with the public has resulted in this exhibition which will be seen in New Orleans, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Delray Beach and Honolulu.
