Description: THE PROTECTION OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD (POKROV PRESVYATIYA BOGORODITSI) 19th century, Palekh school. Egg tempera, gold leaf gesso on wood panel, borders painted in multi color, simulated enamel and on THE VIRGIN OF THE MONTIL a punched ground, 2 insert splints absent from reverse. On the icon commemorating the appearance of Mary in the Church of Vlakhernae in Constantinople, where the townspeople gathered to pray about an impending invasion. The Holy Fool Andrei saw Mary appear in the air, accompanied by saints and holding a veil over the people as a sign of her protection. The Holy Fool Epiphanins is seen with his disciple just to the right of Romanus and Meloddist bottom center. Size: 10 ½” x 12 ¼”(27 x 31cm.)
