We are pleased to offer this lovely Hummel entitled “Girl With Nosegay” featuring a girl holding a cup-like candle holder in her right hand and a small bouquet of flowers in her left hand.

This Hummel figurine is stamped #115 for the mold number and is marked with “Goebel” and “W. Germany”, in blue ink. It is TMK-6, the Missing Bee Mark. The height is about 3 ½ inches and it weighs approximately 45.2 grams. The master sculptor of this piece was Reinhold Unger (See below) in 1938, although this issue of it is dated 1981. It is in very good condition with no chips, or cracks, but some crazing on the bottom of the base. (See below for information on crazing and care of Hummels.) It has the painters initial with “81”.

This figurine is one of three that were created to be a set, and this piece was temporarily withdrawn from production in 2002. By the way, did you know that the name “Hummel” in German means bumble bee, and that’s why Hummels had the bee mark from 1934-1979 and has had it again from 2000 to the present?

The figurine is of a little girl holding a cup-like candle holder in her right hand, and a colorful little bouquet of flowers in her other hand. She has blonde hair and goes without any orange head scarves or bows. Her dress is blue with orange polka dots, and her shoes are brown. The flowers are orange with green centers.

The artist behind the lovely hummel figurines is Berta Hummel, a Franciscan sister called Maria Innocentia. Berta Hummel was born on May 21, 1909 in lower Bavaria where her talent for art was encouraged and nourished by her parents. At the age of 25 she joined the convent of Siessen on Aug. 30, 1934 where she created paintings and drawings that made her famous. Little did her superiors dream that this modest blue-eyed artist who had joined their community would someday be world wide renown.

Reinhold Unger
When the first M. I. Hummel figurines were made in 1935, the Goebel master sculptors were Reinhold Unger and Arthur Moeller. At the time Unger had worked for Goebel for about 20 years. He sculpted actively until the mid-1950’s and is responsible for about 100 different Hummel figurine molds. It could be said that his creativity and expert creftsmanship set standards and laid the foundation for what became the some of the most famous figurine lines of all time.

Sister Hummel worked with both Unger and Moeller with Unger specializing in the sculpted interpretations of her religious works, angels, madonnas, nativities, forest shrine, and saints.

What causes crazing?
Extreme temperatures, sudden changes in temperature, air pollution, excessive handling, and liquids getting inside the air holes in it when washing.

How to clean a Hummel
Dust fairly often, and you can purchase the M. I. Hummel Care Kit. Without that, though, line a sink with towels (to prevent chipping, etc. if dropped while cleaning), fill with barely lukewarm water, tape over air holes, and carefully and gently clean it with a soft toothbrush and baby shampoo. Remove tape and let it dry thoroughly before putting it back on a shelf or in a case.
