Description: Howard 70, oak, 12" New York Board of Education dial. Howard leased these to the U.S. Postal Service and the New York Board of Education. These dials were adapted to these cases in the 2nd quarter 20th century by Howard. All the mechanics are late 19th century and original to the case. The weight is marked appropriately "70" and the movement is signed correctly "E. Howard & Co., Boston". The pendulum is original and the damascening shows in the photo. These were used in the New York City school system till the 1950's and were then fully phased out by electrics. 31" by 15 1/2" (at dial bezel) by 5 1/4" (depth measured at bezel). This is a very nice example of an original late 19th century Howard #70 used in the New York City school system. The clock is working perfectly in my office as I write this narrative.
