Description:
This solid mahogany sideboard was made by the R. J. Horner and Company of NYC. It retains its original label. They were an outstanding manufacturer in the 1880's thru the early 1900's and were known for their highly carved furniture. We have the matching china cabinet that we are selling separately. The sideboard has a delicately carved egg and dart design on the back cornice with acanthus leaf carving along the sides. The top shelf measures 16" deep with larger egg and dart carvings along the edges. The shelf is supported by boldly turned and fluted columns with carved capitals. The beveled mirror is original and in excellent condition. Below are 2 small curved front drawers above one long, large linen drawer. The small drawer on the right has its original blue velvet lining and dividers for silverware. Check out the carved swag design on the center of the large drawer. There are two recessed and raised panel doors below. Each has a shelf inside. All the doors and drawers have their original heavy brass cast hardware and working locks. Notice the additional columns on the front corners and the recessed panels on the sides of the buffet. It rests on boldly carved paw feet. The finish is original and in excellent condition having a rich color and patina. There is an older long scratch that is visible on the top. What a great quality piece of furniture!
