Description: This antique Japanese Kunisada woodblock is a scene from a kabuki play performed in Kieigannen 1 (1848) at the Ichimura-za Kabuki Theater in Edo (Tokyo). Titled, 'Inazuma Byoshi' this play is the first kabuki play scripted from a novel. It was taken from a novel of the same name by the famous author, Santo Kyoden, written in 1806. The three kabuki actors are: Banto Shiuka, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Ichimura Hazaemon. Kunisada studied under Toyokuni and took the name Toyokuni III. Kunisada was born 1786 and died 1864. c.1848.
