Description: The 90,000 strong Hemba people reside on the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A very diverse ecological area leads to subsistence agriculturalist of staples including manioc, maize, peanuts, beans and yams, some hunting and fishing done mostly by the men, and panning of copper from the river. They live in small family matrilineal groups. Headrests of this nature were used to protect fancy hairdos during sleep.
