Description:
This is a fabulous vintage ceramic head vase made by the Helen Jean Studio, Genior, CA in the 1950-1960s. The Head vase was actually acquired on my recent English buying trip and I suspect it appealed to an English buyer with the very English look of a head scarf. The design is unmarked but unmistakeably by Helen Jean Studio, in my opinion the most artistic of the vintage head vase manufacturers and not well known. There is one of her head vases on page 227 of Head Vases Identification Guide 2nd Edition by Kathleen Cole.
The head vase measures 7 inches high by 6 inches long by 5 wide and the vase is her cupped hands. The scarf design is done by a scraffito or sgraphito process of carving the clay by hand and then hand decorating it before firing. The head vase is in very good +++ condition with no chips or cracks but there is some crazing that is normal with these vases. A superior example of a head vase I must class as art pottery from a very talented although little known maker. Lovely!
