Description:
The New Haven Clock Company included a grouping of mantle clocks in 1879 that they named their STATESMAN LINE. Among these was this fine example of Victorian elegance that they named THE GOVERNOR. One of the most fascinating aspects of this line of clocks is the fact that the designers patented a type of case top or "crown" that was removeable and could therefore be used on several different models of their clocks (see my photograph of the embossed PATENT words on the back of the crown). On the brass dial bezel are the words Pat. 1879 which more specifically dates this particular clock. Due to its popularity, the New Haven Clock Company included this clock in their catalogues for about 16 years...until 1895. The eight-day brass mechanism is clean as a whistle and running strongly. It includes a secondary alarm mechanism that was used in the days before bedside alarm clocks became common. Overall, this is one of the cleanest clocks that we've added to our inventory and we've priced it low enough to make it a prize 'catch' for its next owner.
