Description: An acknowledged Expressionist painter, Harold Cohn deliberately simplifies his work in order to compact each line with primitive intensity and meaning. This is exemplified in Cohn’s original watercolor “Waterfall”. Cohn’s powerful use of brushstrokes emulates movement and feeling to the warm, exhilarating landscape. A dry brush affect overlaps lush brushstrokes to produce the texture of the landscape that accents the falling water. The foliage, depicted by giant, powerful black brushstrokes, adds intense movement to the boisterous composition. This energetic, abstract waterfall painting done in warm greens, rusts, blacks, brown, and golden hues is complimented perfectly by the double matting done with a fiddlehead green base, topped with an empires gold mat. The painting is then framed beautifully in an expensive, ornate brown and black wooden frame. The unique, two hundred dollar matting and framing presentation of this piece was individually selected and created by Le Chateau’s renowned master framer, Jeanette Shoenrock, and bears her signature on the back. This painting is exceptionally uncostly for the quality and has been sold at Christie’s auction house for $2,048.92 dollars. Harold Cohn (1908-1982), was a successful painter, printmaker, and teacher working both in Detroit and New Jersey. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country including, The Detroit Institute of Art (1933-45), The Carnegie Institute (1941 & 43), The Los Angeles Museum of Art (1945), The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (1934), and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (1942). During his extensive career, Cohn explored many different elements of contemporary art. These influences can be seen in many of his drawings and paintings; much of his experimentation is thought to be reminiscent of Matisse’s art work. With such a striking comparison, it is no wonder that Cohn has such an extensive auction record.
