Description: The Southern Calendar Clock Company was in business from 1875 until 1879 in St. Louis, Missouri. The three Culver Brothers incorporated the business on March 2nd 1875 and manufactured these handsome and imposing double-dial calendar clocks in their factory at 802 Washington Avenue in St. Louis. Most of the mechanisms used in their clocks were manufactured by the Seth Thomas Clock Company in Connecticut...although some have been found with movements made by the Gilbert Clock Company in Winsted, Connecticut and others by the New Haven Clock Company. They all feature a "perpetual calendar", meaning that the date hand changes from day to day adjusting automatically for 30 and 31 day months as well as every four years for Leap Year. The company sold the clocks directly to their customers and even offered a time-payment plan that permitted six months for completion (with 10% interest added). In September 1899, the Culver Brothers turned their manufacturing interests to stoves and the clockmaking business was closed. Due to the very high quality of both the Mahogany veneer case and the excellent mechanics of their eight-day brass movements, 'FASHIONS' are highly prized by today's collectors and are often sell for more than $3,000. The dials on this clock are original and painted on the zinc dial pans. There has been some 'fill-in' where minor flaking has occurred over 130 plus years. The original covers on the day and date rollers of most FASHION clocks have usually become so dark in color that they are impossible to read. These were professionally recovered exactly as original. The three spire finials are replacements made exactly as the originals--which often have had their tips broken off. Inside the case door is the original instruction paper which is moistly now illegible but about 90% intact. On this paper the company always dated the manufacture of their clocks as they left the St. Louis factory. This one bears the hand-written date of August 1st, 1878. You probably won't find a nicer example of a Southern 'FASHION' or at a more reasonable price.
