Description: Offered for sale is a beautifully carved Chinese Han Dynasty nephrite Jade figure with an extended belly. Of a pleasing mottled green nephrite jade, this figure has one red "iron" spot on its right side which is much more prominent in the photo than it is on the carving, and possibly showing signs of compression due to long burial (mottled areas as can be seen in the photo's), this figure is in excellent condition for its age. I believe it to be a carving of a pregnant woman, which is my only explanation for its greatly extended belly which is being cradled in both arms, with its hands holding something (a sash circling a robe?) on either side of its belly. This figure is very delicately carved. Although difficult to see in the photo's, the figure has a full face, with eyes, nose and mouth, with ears on each side of her face, and with tendrils of hair laying along both sides of her face as well as a hairpiece above her forehead which is holding her hair off her face as it sweeps toward her back. The side photo's show the outlines of her robe, which she is holding closed over her extended belly. When held suspended by her cord, she seems to be kneeling and trying to counterbalance the weight of her belly with her knees and her toes. The Chinese characters on the back of her elbows were written by the Hong Kong dealer from which she was acquired, and they record her age as Han Dynasty, as does her form. This figure measures 3.5" High by 5/8" Wide by 1 1/2" Deep, and it weighs 52.5 grams (1.85 ounces). If interested to see other views of this delicately carved pregnant lady, please e-mail and we will endeavor to provide the details you would like to see.
