Description:
This paperbound book was published in 1966 by the
Museum of Modern Art. It contains 44 photographs by
Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the preeminent
women photojournalist of the late 19th and early 20th
century. The photographs were made between 1899
and 1900 at the Hampton Institute in Hampton Virginia,
a training school for black and American Indian youth.
The book includes text on the history of the school and
a section on the life and work of Johnston. The
photographs are beautifully reproduced. The
photographs show the young people in formal and
dignified arrangements learning such trades as
carpentry, brick laying, and agriculture. The book
begins with three pairs of photographs contrasting
typical living conditions of black at the time with the
improved living conditions of graduates of Hampton.
The condition is very good. The only flaw I note are
some brown spots on the back cover along the spine.
This item will be shipped from Maryland. It can be
combined with other items shipped from Maryland to
save on postage.
