HAMPDEN 23j SPECIAL RAILWAY 2-TONE HUNTING CASE with STANDING ELK GILT TRIMMED" Circa: 1883. Rare and extremely collectible. This model was the very best and highest grade of its day. Featured on this rare surviving example is the mint original white porcelain Arabic RR dial. Also, the bright color contrast on the movement adds to value (98% of examples of this grade always have a lot of fade on the plate colors). WIth the Standing Elk on the case, this watch adds up to a especially collectible and desirable American Early RR high grade. Clean, running and extra impressive. THIS IS A FINE COLLECTIBLE. DON'T INVEST IN THE STOCK MARKET. BUY SOMETHING PROVEN IN TIME.
DIAL: Double sunken white porcelain free of hairlines and signed: "Hampen Watch Co." in fine script. Fancy Arabic figures. Nice.
MOVEMENT: 18 size, hunting model (winds at 3 o'clock), lever set, Full plate nickel and yellow checkerboard patterns with very bright bold color, "Adjusted,", "Special RAILWAY", "23 Jewels", gilt trimmed (all yellow gold capped screw heads, adding to the beauty of the two-tone effects), all 14k rose gold screw down jewel settings, heavy 14k rose gold capped winding barrel jewel, #1,287,443. Original movement to the case. Free of distraction, complete. Can't say enough.
CASE: Original Yellow gold filled very fancy hunting case in excellent condition with a standing Elk on the back and a blank shield on the front (no initials). Excellent condition built by "Champion" (Dueber Hampden).
