Beam 23.9’
Owned by Bucklin and Crane, of New York
Captain B.P. Bowers, Master
The BLACKHAWK was built in 1856 by noted shipbuilder William H. Webb in New York. She was a medium clipper known for her speed, and made 20 runs from New York to San Francisco. She was the only ship Webb built for the California (Gold Rush) trade.
In 1857, she sailed from New York on April 2, and arrived in San Francisco 119 days later. In 1859, she made the same trip in 142 days, and in 1860, departing New York on December 21, she arrived in San Francisco 107 days later.
This half model of the cargo vessel BLACKHAWK is 18 inches in length. It is laminated at the waterline, with the grain of the wood going horizontally for the topsides, and vertically below the waterline. The effect is subtle, but effective.
The hull was rough-carved in Maine, and finished in my shop in Florida. The model is best displayed against a light-colored wall, and is cleverly designed to hang from a single concealed tiny finish nail, or even a common sewing pin. Or, it could be mounted on a suitable backboard .
