Description:
This is a lovely coin silver cup by the premier American silversmiths at Gorham in a Renaissance Revival design. This unique cup has a spreading circular footring with band of wave decoration supporting an egg-shaped cup decorated with engraved strapwork decoration forming a border around the rim embellished on each side with abstract designs. This cup has a stunning figural handle in the form of a woman in classical garb supporting her body on the rim of the cup and holding clusters of grapes in each hand. This handle is exquisitely rendered with dramatic sculptural detail. The variety of the decoration on this cup makes this a very unique and charming piece that also shows off the tremendous skills of the Gorham silversmiths. This cup is in excellent condition with its original gold wash interior, and had been engraved on the center of the body with the name Arthur and the date 1868. It measures approx. 5 1/4" high to the top of the handle, and its opening measures approx. 3 " in diameter. It is marked under the base of the goblet with the mark of the Gorham Manufacturing Company with the lion standing on its haunches indicating 1850-65, and pattern number 503. This beautiful and rare antique coin silver cup would make an excellent addition to any silver collection.
