Description: Exceptionally lovely glass match striker with etching on a ribbed background. Original sterling rim is clearly hallmarked Birmingham 1896 by M Bros. One can see the subtle beginnings of the "Art Nouveau" period in the organic look and feel of the floral design. As the name suggests, loose matches would be stored inside, and then individually struck across the ribbing on the glass, producing friction, and t by flame.
