Description:
We are pleased to offer a wonderful example of a German wedding cup. It is sterling silver, and it is marked on the back, one band up from the bottom. The marking reads as follows: Germany, then there is a cresent moon and a crown, then 925, and what looks like a question mark inside an apothacary bottle, and finally an oval with the words Tresor(?) Ltd. As can be seen, it is in the shape of a lady with a long full skirted dress. She looks Elizibethan with a close ruffled collar. Her arms are stretched above her head. Clutched in her hands are serpents or dragons which arch inward. Their mouths hold the small cup at the top. This cup tilts, and quite easily too. It must have been hard to drink out of it without spilling it. I wonder if this was to add a little fun to the festivities, kind of like our tradition of the bride & groom cramming cake into each other's mouths. Inside the lower part, it is lightly gilded. The serpents, her sleeves, and the bodice of her dress look like thet were gilded also, but it is quite faint now. There are no dents on this piece. This piece was acquired from a lady in her 70's who said it had been used at her mother's wedding. Please feel free to email with any additional questions.
