Description: This is a magnificent and superbly made German silver centerpiece in the form of a handsome cavalier mounted on horseback atop a circular double- tiered base which has been prettily decorated with swirling repousse floral motifs and other organic forms. Each tier of the base has been surrounded by a neatly fluted border which nicely offsets the lovely naturalistic flowers on the lower base and also the detailed grassy terrain depicted on the upper level. The flower-covered lower base tapers gently upwards and inwards to create an elegant support for the upper level with its truly exceptional figural motif of the horse and rider. The dapper chevalier is beautifully dressed in the clothing of a 17th century nobleman and sits purposefully astride his magnificent steed which is rearing upwards, presumably in reaction to the appearance before its feet of a tortoise, a large snail and a lizard. All of these elements have been beautifully crafted. The rider's remarkably realistic aristocratic face has been beautifully observed and has been crafted to the very highest standards with great skill and attention to detail, from his wide brow and deep set eyes to the tip of his Van Dyke style beard. His clothing has also been depicted with exquisite precision, from his wide-brimmed hat with its jaunty plumed feather through his jacket with its sash and oversized lace collar to his riding breeches tucked into knee high leather riding boots fitted snugly into stirrups with attached spurs. The same exceptional attention to detail has been accorded to his horse which has been accessorized with decorative detailing around the bridle and reins and has been outfitted with a saddle which also supports on each side a shield decorated with the face of a lion. The horse's tail, main, and hooves together with his head with its flaring nostrils and laid back ears are all of extraordinarily high quality. The head of both the horse and the cavalier are removable revealing hollow interiors which can be used for storage. This museum quality piece is in excellent condition throughout with a most attractive patina and crisp, clear definition on all the decorative elements. The base has been marked with a set of German hallmarks which can also be seen on the head of the horse upon removal from the body. This is a unique and distinctive item which would make a wonderful conversation piece and is guaranteed to highlight any setting. It measures approx. 9 1/.4" in diameter at the base x approx. 11 " at the widest point x approx. 16 " tall. It weighs 65 troy ounces.
