Description: Large fighting sword of good weight and dimensions. Semi-basket guard of flattened diamond-section iron bars, showing forging lamination. Straight expanded quillons, large obverse side ring and diagonal reverse side ring with integral thumb ring. Conical pommel of octagonal section. Tapered hand-and-a-half grip with original leather wrap, the pommel having never been removed. Straight single-edged 37 1/4" blade with double fullers, the lower half double edged. Stamped on the ricasso with the mark of Wolfgang Stantler, the famed Munich bladesmith. Metal parts pitted overall with a dark gray-black patina. An important type, of which similar examples can be found in the Wallace Collection. Stantler blades are especially sought after. Overall length 46".
